The county’s commitment to National Fire Prevention Month proved to be an important topic at this week’s county executive media briefing.

County Executive Marc Elrich highlighted concerns about charging lithium-ion batteries. He pointed out the dangers of overcharging them. And he asked residents not to charge their devices in beds, couches or under pillows.

Whole Blood

Elrich also emphasized the lifesaving impact of the county’s whole blood transfusion program. Introduced in 2024, EMS responders carry low-titer O positive whole blood in special field coolers. This allows first responders to begin blood transfusions at the scene of an emergency.

He explained, “…in cases of severe trauma and excessive bleeding, it can be life and death.” While not used on every call, it saved 16 lives in the first four months it was given. The current record marks 200 units of blood, reaching 150 patients. The fast action can lessen the chances of a bad outcome from delayed treatment at a hospital.

Fire Prevention

Fire Chief Corey Smedley asked residents to test their smoke alarms and change the battery when they change their clocks on Nov. 1. If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, he cautioned, you should replace it. He also advised developing an escape plan for families and pets. Replenishing emergency kits was also mentioned. The kits should include 1 gallon of water for each adult for 3 days of drinking water, any needed medications, non-perishable foods, blanket and flashlights.

Other Agenda Items

The County Executive encouraged residents to take advantage of early voting for the Nov. 3 general election. In-person early voting will be offered at 14 designated centers and mail-in ballots can be deposited in secure drop boxes in 58 locations.

Several bills will get the county executive’s signature this week including measures against algorithmic price fixing, street racing, and street takeovers.

Also noted at the briefing was the appointment of County Health Officer Dr. Kisha Davis to president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
