Early voting started Thursday at 14 centers in Montgomery County and continues through Thursday, Oct. 29 including Saturday and Sunday.
“People should exercise their constitutional right to vote,” Montgomery County Board of Elections President David Naimon said Thursday morning at the Silver Spring Civic Building early voting center. “We give them lots of different options as to how to do it.”
County residents can vote early from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. at any of the 14 centers. Voters can text “EV” and their zip code to 77788 to find their nearest early voting centers with estimated wait times. In recent election years, weekends have the lightest turnout during early voting. Residents can also text “BOX” and their zip code to 77788 to find their nearest drop boxes.
Election Day
On Election Day Tuesday, Nov. 3, voters must go to their assigned polling location to vote in-person, or they will have to cast a provisional ballot if they go to a different center.
In addition to casting a ballot in-person on Election Day, residents can also vote by mail.
Voting by Mail
Voters can request a print-at-home mail-in ballot until Friday, Oct. 30. There are 58 ballot drop boxes in Montgomery County and voters can drop their mail-in ballot in any one of them by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
“I think people should be very confident that we’re going to have a fair, open and transparent election,” Naimon said.
“Bipartisan teams are involved in every step of the process. Ballots are only opened by bipartisan teams and processed by bipartisan teams.” He noted ballots from drop boxes are collected by bipartisan teams.
A Transparent Process
Residents can watch the ballot counting process in-person in Gaithersburg or via livestream. Saturday, Oct. 24 is the next scheduled date for the ballot review, which is called the “canvass.”
Early voting ballots will be processed on Election Day, according to Naimon. At the end of Election Day, results will be released from early voting and from pre-Election Day mail-in ballots that were canvassed. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day in order to be accepted. 50,000 mail-in ballots have been returned so far.
